Check google rankings for phentermine, viagra etc.. people are using old domains, creating subdomains. But I wouldn't call that sandbox, it's not that google is preventing new sites to rank for competitve terms, it's just that older sites rank better, they have more trust from google, which takes time to gain.. We put up tons of sites and they get indexed and traffic from G within days. But, this only works for medium competitive terms ... highly competitive terms take a long time and a lot more dedicated focus. It's also very easy to fall back into it once you've gotten out of it :) Whatever you want to call it, sandbox, penalty phase ... don't let anyone tell you how long you have to wait to get ranked, and don't let anyone tell you that you are now safe.
